Maryland Casino to spend millions on new gaming optionsThe Oceans Downs casino in Maryland is getting ready to spend millions of dollars to add new gaming options to their casino floor. This past Wednesday the spending panel of the state decided to approve a contract which would over $32 million dollars spend on new slot machines for the casino.
Comptroller Peter Franchot was not in favor of spending the massive amount but Governor Martin O’Malley and Nancy K. Kopp the treasurer outvoted the Comptroller at the meeting. Franchot stated he opposed the slot machines because he feels the money is going to something that is just not working.
Franchot stated: “I had to put my hand up again and ask why more taxpayer money is being paid out before getting any revenue from slots. For some reason, the state has agreed to pay for machines with public money, when in almost every other state, the gambling companies absorb that cost. It gives the impression that the state has streets paved with gold.”
The casinos were approved by voters in the state two years ago yet there is no working casino as of yet. The state has five planned casinos and none of them are working which is why Franchot is so opposed to the contract for the slot gaming.
