Beau Rivage reopens after Katrina disaster
Beau Rivage Resort and Casino was once the shimmering casino of Mississippi's Gulf Coast. The business has reopened exactly one year after Katrina's disasterous approach in the region. The result of Katrina was still visible only blocks away. Across from the opening ceremony, a group of protesters complained about the lack of progress being made in providing affordable housing for families as well as other lingering problems.
The $800 million Beau Rivage is owned by MGM Mirage. It sustained severe damage to its lobby but did not end up as devastated as casinos in the neighborhood. It is now the first casino to reopen since the disaster.
